Side Effects

1. Headache

Some users have reported dizziness or recurring headaches when taking accutane.

2. Brittle nails

Brittle and broken nails are often visible in patients taking accutane and this is regarded as one of the most unwelcomed and inconvenient accutane side effects.  Even though it isn’t life-threatening, it can be highly inconvenient at times.

3. Allergy

There has been a rise in reports of increased allergic reactions to other substances when taking accutane. If you’re currently on accutane medication you need to be sure to let your practitioner know before you are prescribed with another drug that could adversely interact with Accutane and cause more undesirable Accutane side effects.

4. Sensitivity to Light

Patients on accutane treatment may be extra sensitive to sunlight and other form of artificial lighting such as tanning beds, UV lamps and sunlamps. Excess exposure to sunlight could also cause a severe accutane side effect that involves dryness and irritation of the skin and eyes.

5. Menstruation Cycle

It is possible to experience changes in the menstruation cycle when you’re on accutane such as a heavy flow of menstrual blood or a lesser flow to none at all.

6. Dryness of the Skin

As accutane causes the sebaceous gland to shrivel up and grow smaller in size, dry skin is yet another one of the Accutane side effects to note. This form of dryness does not only occur on the skin but also on other parts of the body such as the genitals.

7. Thinning of the skin

The administration of accutane can also cause some forms of dryness and flakiness on the skin of the patient. Some patients have reported a loss of elasticity in the skin.

8. Slow Healing of Bruises

Patients may also suffer from the slow healing of cuts and bruises on the skin. There have also been reports of unusual bleeding in some patients taking accutane.

9. Muscle Pain

There can also be muscle pain and inflammation in the ligaments and tendons of patients taking accutane.  Those who are afflicted by gout and joint pains should avoid taking accutane at all cost.

10. Chronic Fatigue

This is another serious accutane side effect that many patients would prefer to avoid. It can interfere with one’s ability to work and function normally and can cause a severe decline in productivity.

There are other more severe effects of accutane such as birth defects in pregnant women as well as life-threatening conditions affecting those with heart disease, high blood pressure and asthma.  Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any of the above conditions before you are prescribed with accutane for acne.
